Result: 2-7 to 0-8

Castleknock progressed to the next round of the Junior D Football Championship with a hard fought win over O’Dwyers in Balbriggan on Thursday night (May 19th). In a close game played in blustery and showery conditions, it was a goal in each half for the away team that decided the outcome.

The away team got off to a flying start and raced into a 5 point lead after 10 minutes, with Tony Kelly getting a goal and a point. However, O’Dwyers battled back with the aid of a strong wind and, although each side was guilty of some wayward shooting, the sides went in level at half time, 1-2 to 5 points.

O’Dwyers took the lead early in the second half, but after that it was all Castleknock as they took control of the mid-field and rattled off some fine points. The vital score arrived mid-way through the half when Len Dowling finishing off a good move involving James Canney to raise the green flag, and this was followed up by a string of points to leave Castleknock 7 points up with about 10 minutes to go.

The home team battled back bravely at the end in search of a goal but were unable to breach a Castleknock defence that had the advantage of an extra man following an earlier red card. O’Dwyers did manage two points in the final minutes, but the away team held out for a 5 point win.

Castelknock now go on to meet Ballyboden St Endas in Porterstown at 7pm on Saturday evening (May 21st).
